Start with Protein and Champion Wellness

In 2015 I was finally motivated to get in shape physically by having fun training for the TV show American Ninja Warrior (see Ninja For Life website for more there). Along the way I made many changes.

Today I find opportunities to help others reach their goals, so I volunteer part-time as a Wellness Champion for my employer. I speak with fellow colleagues that are making radical changes themselves and want to share what they have learned with others. For example one has been an athlete most of his life, and has found the benefits of going vegan. I was excited to hear he wanted to share these benefits with others, but talking with other colleagues I could tell many would not make immediate changes since they love eating meat and can't picture themselves giving up what they enjoy.

So I realize for many of us we need to start with small changes. Where do you get started?

I thought I knew everything about fitness already, so when I was offered fitness classes I reluctantly signed up. Immediately I found out that I was not following the proper form for lifting weights. I started to ask about recommendations and tracking calories with tools like Myfitnesspal came up. I started tracking everything daily. To learn more about the food I was eating a tool like Fooducate gives you grade ratings. One thing I found is that the foods I ate were very heavy on fat & carbs, and very little protein even though they were advertised as high-protein.

By reading up I found that many supplements are a waste of money, but since I needed help bringing my protein up to 1 gram per pound of bodyweight, I started researching the options. I was using plain whey isolate protein for a while which I still like to use, but the costs have slowly been going up. I've recently focused more on pea protein since it is vegan and still a great source. If you are interested in either protein that I currently use you can find links to them below:
